8.6 Total Score

The Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra is a behemoth of a robot vacuum cleaner that delivers powerful performance in both vacuuming and mopping hard floors, alongside well-executed digital features; including the ability to self-clean, refill the water tank and empty its dust canister – but it will cost you a fortune.

  • Self-emptying, self-cleaning
  • Simple setup
  • Quiet
  • Great mopping performance
  • Decent obstacle avoidance
  • Bulky base station
  • Taller than many robot vacuums

We now have a new frontier in hybrid vacuums and mopping robots that seem to do pretty everything we ever wanted from an automatic household cleaning assistant. While we’ve tested and reviewed some earlier models including the Roomba iRobot and Shark Vertex Pro, the Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra seems to be a little unique, and just about everything you could ask for.

It mops floors with floor cleaner or water and then cleans its own mop pad and refills the onboard tank – and once done, it takes out its own trash with a self-emptying dock. And if you want to keep an eye on what’s happening at home when you’re away, the S7 MaxV Ultra has a live-view camera, too. In short, Roborock has packed nearly every feature we’ve seen on high-end robot vacuums into the S7 MaxV Ultra, and we think it’s worth the investment.

Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra Review main

The Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra is the name given to the package that bundles the S7 MaxV robot vacuum and the base station that empties both the dust canister and water tank, while at the same time refilling the robot vacuum with clean water. The robot vacuum sports an all-familiar circular shape – just like all other Roborocks – and measures 13.89 x 13.77 x 3.8 inches. These dimensions make it a little taller than some other robot vacuums on the market, including the Eufy RoboVac G20, meaning it will struggle to clean under some furniture with low clearance.

On looks, the S7 MaxV arrives in matte black with a plastic bumper around the top edge, while the bottom edge holds the built-in camera. The robot vacuum also includes a Lidar scanner, too. There’s also a 3 x 0.5-inch (w x h) disc that sits at the top of the appliance, and it works in sync with the camera for seamless navigation around your home and helps avoid obstacles in its path. The camera can also be used to see and converse with anyone in its field of view, making it handy for soothing pets when you’re not at home.

At the top, there are three buttons for switching the robot vacuum on or off, starting a spot clean, or directing the unit back to the charging dock. It also has an LED that pulses white when vacuuming, blue when mopping and green when charging.

There are two rubber wheels on the bottom of the S7 MaxV Ultra to work its way around your home, along with a rubber brush bar that collects dirt from floors, sweeping it into the 13.4oz dust canister. There’s also a 6.7oz water tank and a semi-circular-shaped mopping pad, which allows the robot vacuum to wash as well as sweep hard floors. According to Roborock, this size is sufficient to cover an area of 3,230 sq ft before it can be refilled again. It also includes sonic vibration technology that creates a scrubbing motion of 3,000 times a minute, which removes ground-in stains from hard floors.

Among the highlight features of the Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra are five levels of suction when vacuuming, three scrub intensities when mopping, and three cleaning modes (mop, vacuum, or vac and mop). Also included in the package is a docking station that works as the charging station and automatically empties the dust canister. The 84.5fl oz capacity container can hold seven weeks’ worth of dirt and debris, which translates to significant cleans per week.

The base station also offers the ability to clean the mopping pads, and empties the dirty water into a 101fl oz tank, before refiling the onboard water tank from the 85.5fl clean water tank. However, you’ll need some space to fit the 16.6 x 19.8 x 16.5in docking station.

Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra Review: Performance

The Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra cleans in a precise, yet predictable pattern that outlines the edges of the room before cleaning in an S-shaped pattern within the outline. It adheres to the same pattern when mopping and can do both actions simultaneously. Setting up the Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra is pretty straightforward: Just present a QR code generated by the app n your phone to the robovac’s cameras, and you’re able to start cleaning the floors in your home.

The Robot vacuum effortlessly collects fine dust, cookie crumbs, and larger debris – including cereal – from hard floors, even on the lowest power setting. However, it tends to scatter larger debris further around the room, which prolongs the vacuuming process than you’d expect.

For carpets, the vacuum can suck the majority of fine dust and larger debris, but you’ll need powerful settings to give it a deeper clean. It’s interesting to see the robovac automatically increase the suction level when a carpet is detected, adjusting from level one, dubber “Quiet,” to maximum or Max + without any manual input.

The included Lidar sensor and camera ensure that the robot vacuum takes a methodical route around your home when vacuuming and mopping. It also keeps the vacuum conscious of furniture and other obstacles in the house, so it doesn’t bump into anything – an innovative approach unavailable in robot vacuums that only rely on gyroscopes, such as the Eufy G20 for example.

The Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra, unlike most other robot vacuums that claim to mop hard floors by simply sloshing water around, is capable of scrubbing as well. That makes it ideal for removing tough dried-in stains such as Coca-Cola on a hard floor and fresh dirt. Even better, when set to vacuuming and mopping, the robot vacuum will automatically lift the mop on detecting carpet, to avoid making it soggy.

During use, the S7 MaxV Ultra runs pretty quietly on its lowest level of suction, but it rises when cleaning hard floors, and is a bit higher on the carpet. It runs equivalent to a running shower’s noise level. The only time you’ll hear the noise levels go higher is when the robovac docks and empties its dust canister and water tank.

We mentioned that the built-in camera can also be used to see and speak to anyone in its field of view. Practically, it is mesmerizing to see a live feed from the camera as the robot vacuum makes its way around your home. The sound is clear using the microphone and speaker to converse, also making it a great appliance for soothing pets when you’re away from home.

The Roborock App

The Roborock app is easy and simple to use, and once the robot vacuum is connected to your Wi-Fi, you can easily launch a full clean by just tapping on the icon of the robot vacuum and pressing ‘clean’. From the app, you can control the cleaning mode as well as the suction level and scrubbing intensity.

As the Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra cleans your floors, it also stores a map of your home, which you can later split into different rooms and zones, thus, you can focus on specific areas rather than your entire home. You can even use the app to create a 3D map of your home, which you can use to come up with a matrix map of your home, capturing details about furniture and floor types so you can set specific cleaning tasks for the areas around your area or dining table, for example. However, this functionality is limited to people using the robot vacuum with an iPhone 12 or above.

The Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra is also compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant, enabling you to use your voice, instead of the app, to start the robot vacuum cleaning.

Battery Life

Roborock claims that the S7 MaxV Ultra’s battery will last up to 180 minutes between charges, but that’s in Quiet mode. When the robot vacuum is used at full power, it will last around 75 minutes, before automatically returning to the base station to charge with a battery level of 19%.

That battery life is sufficient to do a full clean for a three-bedroom, two-storey house. The robot vacuum will also return to finish cleaning if it didn’t complete its session when the battery ran out.

It takes up to four hours to fully recharge the Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra, which, according to Roborock is 30% faster than using other Roborock charging docks. There’s a clear battery level indicator in the app to view how much run-time is available.

Should I buy the Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra?

As designed and priced, the Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra does a lot. It does more than you’re paying for. It vacuums, mops, detects rugs, cleans itself, and even lets you check on your pets when you’re away from home. But still, that technology comes at a hefty price, making it the most expensive robot vacuum package I’ve ever reviewed.

Even at that price, there’s still a lot to like about the Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra, from strong vacuuming performance to a basic mop that cleans itself and doesn’t require laying out mopping pads and water tanks to dry after use. It’s versatile, convenient, and intuitive to use and good for keeping floors sparkling between deep mopping sessions.

I particularly love the temporary obstacle avoidance option used by the iRobot Roomba J7+, a vacuum-only device that costs half as much, but if you’re looking for similar performance and want the ultimate 2-in-1 robot vacuum and mop, the Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra is an excellent, albeit very expensive, choice.
